The Cheek by Jowl “‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore” at the Barbican is well worth checking out – it’s only here for another week or so before the company goes off to America for a run at the Brooklyn Academy, and then on to Spain. So catch them while they’re here.
It’s an edgy, dynamic, sexy production – and rattles along, tucking the action away in about two hours without an interval – and it keeps you on your toes throughout. The last scene is particularly full of heart…. All great family entertainment, and once again it was grand to see former students from my time at RADA – Lizzie Hopley and Nyasha Hatendi – strutting their stuff to great effect. Lizzie is a sharp, saucy Putana, and Nyasha brings lots of verve and attack to the Friar, with just a hint of Desmond Tutu…a striking contrast to his dignified commanding officer in my production of “Journey’s End” during his final year at the Academy, back in 2004. And of course the two young leads – out of the same Gower St stable – Lydia Wilson and Jack Gordon, are also sensational.
